Dress for Sucess Fall 2012

As I mentioned before, I just recently started law school and it has gotten me thinking about building a professional wardrobe. I have a few other blog posts about professional outfits, but today I want to talk about fall 2012 professonional trends. Professional dressing definitely depends on your office environment. As an attorney I will probably live in suits, most of which will be probably very conservative and slightly boring. I imagine some days though I’ll get to have a little more fun. That may not be the case for you though, so here are a few really fantastic outfits for Fall 2012.

1.) The first outfit is representative of the menswear trend which seems to be popular for Fall 2012. What I love about it is you get to experiment with a different time period and style.  It reminds me of a classic newspaper reporter.  For this look, go for clean lines and classic colors: black, charcoal gray, and brown.
2.) The second outfit is a fitted cap sleeve dress.  Every woman should own one of these.  It flatters all body shapes and you look put together without worrying what color shirt goes with your pants goes with your shoes goes with your bag, etc.  Throw on this dress, some classic black heels, and simple jewelry.  You can also add a blazer, cardigan, or statement jewelry to mix it up.

3.) Cropped pants are super popular this fall and I think we’ll continue to see it throughout the spring 2013 as well.  This is for a more fun office atmosphere.  You can also take the same elements of this outfit; the cropped pants and bright jewelry and make it a little more conservative.  Because the pants are short they are a great opportunity to show off your killer new heels.
4.) This fourth outfit includes a few trends; polka dots, color blocking, capped toe, and a pussy bow blouse.  The point of this outfit was to showcase the pussy bow blouse.  You can get these in all colors and styles, but they are perfect under a blazer, sweater, or on their own and they add some diversity to the simple button down blouse.

5.) The pencil skirt is a classic piece that belongs in every woman’s closet.  I chose this pencil skirt because it’s patterned, yet still classic and versatile.  It’s all black for those conservative offices, but it makes a  statement and keeps your clothing fashion forward.  If you want just one or two things to switch up your wardrobe, this is a great idea.

6.) Peplum is taking over!  You can get peplum tops, peplum dresses, and even puplum skirts.  Take your pick.  I have a few peplum tops and a peplum dress.  I paired this with a classic black pencil skirt as a way to use pieces you probably already have.
How do you switch up your office clothing?  Any favorite pieces you have gotten for  Fall 2012?

All about chambray

All about chambray

I am a bit obsessed…with chambray.  Above are a few ways I wear it.

The first updates office wear for fashion forward spring wear.  Pair a plain chambray shirt with a bright pencil skirt and accessorize it with some bright heels and a bright collar necklace.  Not everyone can get away with this at the office, but it’s stunning.

The second outfit is denim on denim which I love.  Bring the look together by adding a theme.  This theme is leopard print.  You can also do a bright color, another pattern, a sweater over the chambray shirt, or a leather jacket.  This is the most versatile outfit.

Finally we have a chambray dress.  As above, this can be worn a million different ways.  Add a statement necklace, awesome shoes, or the perfect jacket for a versatile, never-gets-old look.

How to Wear Tights

Tights are the perfect transitioning piece from summer to fall or fall to winter depending on where you live and what your work dress code is like. Now comes the question of how do you wear tights? Here are a few key rules to keep in mind when wearing tights.
1. If the tights are busy/patterned, keep the rest of the outfit simple.
2. If you want to focus on the outfit, keep the tights simple.
3. Do not wear tights with open toe shoes…it kind of defeats the purpose of keeping you warm. *Some people may disagree, but I’m sure you have a pair of closed toe shoes in your closet.
4. Match your tights with your shoes.
5. If you work in a professional or conservative environment wear dark colored tights only: black, brown, gray.
6. Do use tights in color blocking. This style isn’t really mine, but for those of you who like to stand out a bit more, using bright purple or red tights to complement the other colors of your outfit is fine.
7. Don’t wear tights with something obviously meant to be worn in summer.

Here are a few different ways to wear tights:

Outfit 1: Neutral Tights-I paired neutral tights with a lace scalloped skirt, simple sweater, and a cardigan that matches the shoes/tights.  This is very simple, yet you can change it up a bit by throwing on some interesting jewelry: bright colors, statement pieces, long necklaces, big rings, bracelets.

Outfit 2: Sweater Tights-This is a comfy, lounging around outfit. Try some patterned sweater tights to keep you warm in the winter.  Accessorize this outfit with a beanie, gloves, and a scarf.

Outfit 3: Polka Dot Tights-This is a professional work outfit with a bit of fun; polka dot tights.  Polka Dots are huge this season and they are perfect to add a bit of fun into an outfit. These are conservative enough that you could get by in most offices.  The rest of the outfit is very professional with a pencil skirt, sweater, and blazer.

Outfit 4: Black Tights-I love the different textures of this outfit.  Suede booties, soft tights, lace skirt, sheer blouse, and a pea coat.   Because it’s all one color, you can play around with patters and texture a little bit more because the black ties it all together.  This is fun for a night out, dinner, or a show.

How to Wear Tights

Here are a few final tips for wearing tights:

If you are looking to maximize your budget, definitely stick with plain black tights.  They are the most versatile.   You should probably buy more than 1 at a time.  I tend to lose tights often or they get a snag and are ruined.

Tights tend to be seasonal so stock up in the winter so you never run out.

Always have clear nail polish on hand, just in case you get a run. It will keep the tights together until you can get a new pair.

J Crew Vest

I saw this outfit on the J Crew website and totally loved it! Soo cute for fall and into winter!  Here are a few different color ideas and variations!

The outfit on the right is obviously the most similar to the outfit in the picture.  For the outfit to the left, I used a toggle vest, a flannel shirt from American Eagle, and a striped sweater.  I love mixing stripes and flannel and throwing the vest over it so it’s not too many patterns going on.
